Our All Time Best Free Markdown Editors/Writers/Notes List for Windows, Linux, or macOS (9+ of Them)

Do you love writing using markdown and in search for your ideal markdown editor/writer/notes for Windows, Linux, or macOS? No sweat! Because I personally have searched high and low for the best of markdown editors/writers/notes we can get either on Windows, Linux, or mac OS for free of charge and presented it below.

Nerdizen.xyz — I remembered the first time I know Markdown was like 5 years ago. It was when I used Grav as Content Management System (CMS) for one of my blog where Markdown is the default markup language for writing page/post on Grav.

Markdown is a lightweight markup language for creating formatted text using a plain-text editor. John Gruber and Aaron Swartz created Markdown in 2004 as a markup language that is appealing to human readers in its source code form. Markdown is widely used in blogging, instant messaging, online forums, collaborative software, documentation pages, and readme files.

I personally loves to use Markdown because its simple syntaxes and made writing fun because I can leave entirely (or most of) HTML codes so I can focus more on writing the content, it’s like: “Hey, you are an author right now, not a web programmer”.

And because I can’t seem to leave Markdown including when writing articles on my Windows laptop, here it is the 9+ best Markdown editors/writers/notes list I have compiled based on my own preferences in which all of them can be downloaded and installed for free of charge!

1. Typora (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Typora Markdown editor Windows 10

Typora so far is still the best Markdown writer program I can find on Windows and I still use it a lot for writing articles on my Windows laptop.

Nice user interface, customizable, and lot’s of “extra features” to makes writing more fun and easier is what made me still pick Typora as the best Markdown editor for Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Not only just a Markdown editor, Typora is also a WYSIWYG writer at same time. On the default mode, Typora will render all Markdown and HTML codes into what we will see normally on a web page meanwhile Source Code mode is the one if you are prefer directly Write using the syntax highlighted raw text of HTML Markdown itself.

Unfortunately, the free version of Typora is ended now with the last beta version of it being released. But don’t worry, I still have my personal backup of Typora free beta version you can download and install below (Windows 64-bit only) else you can head to Typora website to purchase the paid latest version of it.

Download Typora Update x64 1117_0.11.18.exe – Free Beta | Windows 64-bit (68.1 MB)

2. Ghostwriter (Windows | Linux)

Ghostwriter markdown editor Windows 10

Ghostwriter is another choice for many as preferred Markdown editor program for Windows or Linux users. It is clearly one of popular writing Windows / Linux program we can get with over ⭐️ 3.4k stars on GitHub .

Ghostwriter main point is it’s simplicity and clean user interface allowing users to focus solely on writing the content.

The user interface of Ghostwriter makes writing features like toggling dark mode, distraction free mode, document statistics like word count, full screen mode and live HTML preview mode easily reachable.

3. Abricotine (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Abricotine Markdown editor Windows 10

On the next entry we have another well known Markdown editor program for Windows / Linux / macOS with over ⭐️ 2.4k stars on GitHub, it is Abricotine. I also still use Abricotine sometimes to replace the Ghostwriter when writing blog post on my Windows laptop.

If I can summarized it, Abricotine is like a hybrid product from Typora and Ghostwriter. Abricotine is a raw Markdown editor with syntax highlighting just like Ghostwriter, but is is also could live render some elements like image, iframe, math, etc.

Download Abricotine latest version on Github

4. MarkText (Windows | Linux | macOS)

MarkText Markdown editor Windows 10

Quoted from the official GitHub page, MarkText is the open source simple and elegant Markdown editor that focused on speed & stability. So far, MarkText is the most popular Markdown editor program on GitHub on our best Markdown editor/writer/notes program for Windows / Linux / macOS list so far with ⭐️ 31.4k stars.

Elegant may be, but simply simple may not. MarkText is a serious contender to Typora, a WYSIWYG writer app and a raw Markdown editor with syntax highlighting at same time with extended features to makes writing easier.

Although MarkText is not as much as Typora in term of customizations so far, but being an open source project clearly an advantage that MarkText may will evolve more and more in the future surpassing Typora as the best Markdown writer/editor program on Windows, Linux, or macOS.

5. Zettlr (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Zettlr Markdown editor Windows 10

Zettlr is one of quite popular Markdown editor program you can get for free on Windows / Linux / macOS with currently ⭐️ 7k stars gained on GitHub, stated itself as a tool to make professional texts easy and motivating.

Zettlr is more or less similar to Abricotine on the writing environment, a raw Markdown editor with syntax highlighting with some elements like link, image, iframe, etc. could be rendered live on the fly.

Although the user interface seems unappealing at first glance, Zettlr may be your dream Markdown editor for Windows after you get the hang of it. The project on GitHub also still actively developed means Zettlr still could evolve in the future.

6. Haroopad (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Haroopad Markdown editor Windows 10

Haroopad is one of the long standing Markdown editor or, Markdown enabled document processor for creating web friendly documents if quoted from the website, available for free for Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Haroopad suit everybody whether you are just using Markdown for writing or want to seek more beyond Markdown editing. Haroopad user interface is also neat and provide ease especially for people who are new to Markdown.

7. PanWriter (Windows | Linux | macOS)

PanWriter Markdown editor Windows 10

Sometimes too much features or flashy user interface just distract us from what really matters: Writing, and then PanWriter might be the Markdown editor for you.

Markdown was made to simplified things, formatting texts using simple syntaxes so it can be easily converted to other document formats. On PanWriter you will get it, no toolbar, no distraction, there is only you and the texts.

However when this post was first published (as of April 2022), PanWriter is still relatively new compared to other Markdown editors on our best free Markdown editor/writer/notes programs for Windows / Linux / macOS list. So, who knows what will PanWriter become in the future.

8. Znote (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Znote Markdown editor Windows 10

Quoted from the official website, Znote is a markdown editor inspired by Jupyter notebook. Znote is you best companion in prototyping and centralizing your scripts.

Znote might be a little bit overwhelming for people who are new to Markdown because how the program designed. However, Znote might be a powerful tool once we get the gist of how the feature works for creating advanced document on our Windows / Linux / macOS.

Znote is a notebook focused Markdown editor available for free on Windows, Linux, or macOS though the Dev mode of Znote that contains more advanced features is an optional paid feature.

Download Znote latest version on Github

9. Laverna (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Laverna Markdown editor Windows 10

Now on the last entry on our best free Markdown editor/writer/notes program for Windows, Linux, or macOS is Laverna. Laverna which got more than ⭐️ 8k stars on GitHub, is actually not a full fledged Markdown editor, but rather a notebook app with Markdown enabled text formatting.

Quoted from the official website, Laverna is a note-taking with Markdown editor app programmed using JavaScript, and encryption to secure your saved notes on your Windows / Linux / macOS device. Consider Laverna as an alternative open source to the famous Evernote.

However when this post was first written (as of April 2022), Laverna development seems had stagnant. You may want to also check Encryptic, an encryption-focus open source note-taking app that is actually based on Laverna.

Honorable mention of another best Markdown editor/writer/notes program for Windows / Linux / macOS

Now below might not belong specifically into “Markdown editor/writer/notes programs” for Windows, Linux, or macOS either they are not specifically designed for Markdown editing or not a real program that can be installed to our device. However, they might had your dream features to edit or write using Markdown.

Microsoft Visual Studio Code (Windows | Linux | macOS)

VSCodium / Visual Studio Code fork Markdown editor Windows 10

Microsoft Visual Studio Code or simply know as Visual Code is one of the most popular tool for coding for years whether we are new to coding or an expert developer. From many functions, one of the capability Visual Studio has is editing the Markdown.

Markdown editing has become one of the core feature in Visual Studio Code with built in functions including the preview / side by side mode. And thanks to the popularity, people from all over the world has created numerous extensions for Visual Studio Code including dozens for Markdown that can extend Markdown editing on the program.

My favorite Visual Studio extension for Markdown is the “Markdown Extended”. With the extension, there are lots of additional functions can be used for Markdown editing including the support for abbreviation (<abbr title=''></abbr>) syntax support.

Download Visual Studio Code latest version on official website

Atom (Windows | Linux | macOS)

Being described as a ‘hackable text editor for the 21st century’, Atom is a text / code editor that now also gaining popularity that is presented by GitHub, so there is no question about the credibility of the project. What I really love about Atom is it’s beautiful user interface.

Not only code editing, Atom also has Markdown editing embedded in the core. Meanwhile the built-in Markdown editing in Atom is good enough (better, if not the same than Visual Studio Code), we can also install from dozens of extension / plugin to extend the Markdown editing features.

Download Atom latest version on Github

StackEdit (Web App)

StackEdit Markdown editor Windows 10

Not a real program that can be installed to our device, StackEdit can be launched and used to edit Markdown document in an instant because it is a web app that can be accessed at https://stackedit.io/app# using your favorite web browser.

Although StackEdit can only be accessed using a web browser by accessing its address, it is one of the progressive web app means after we visited and completely loaded StackEdit for the first time, it will cached the web app to our web browser so we can use StackEdit anytime even without internet connection (offline) to edit our Markdown documents as long as we do not clear our web browser cache and data.

If just StackEdit is a real program that can be installed on my device, it would already be at the second on my list of my ‘Best Free Markdown Editors/Writers/Notes for Windows, Linux, or macOS’ here because how good it is from the features and user interface.

qiDroid (Bootleggers Q) Android Generic System Image (GSI) Download + Review

Nerdizen.xyz — qiDroid is an Android GSI project that uses Bootleggers as the ROM base. So qiDroid = Bootleggers GSI-fied.

Although there are no official Android GSI yet for Bootleggers, but thanks to the massive community of GSI enthusiasts now one of best Android GSI builder eremitein @Github made a Bootleggers Q GSI named qiDroid.

Bootleggers is one of popular custom ROM project know for its unique slogan: Shisufied. Certainly Bootleggers is not just an ordinary custom Android ROM because they have a concept here.

So what is Shishufied exactly? Well, I don’t know either. But from my experience since used the olders Bootleggers Android 8, Android 9 and now Android 10, Shisufied perhaps similar to retro feels.

As Shisufied at its core, Bootleggers ROMs always have preinstalled themes, colors, sounds, etc. to Shisufied our Android device experience.

Other than the Shisufied concept, Bootleggers is just like any other AOSP-based custom ROM that strive for maximum customizations just like Bliss, CrDroid, etc.

Project Sakura Q Android Generic System Image (GSI) Download + Review

Nerdizen.xyz — Searching high and low for a perfect Android GSI, now I stumbled upon a quite unique GSI called Project Sakura.

So what is so different from Project Sakura? Other than it’s catching name maybe, it is one of few ROM project left that still based on LineageOS.

Quoting from the info from the GSI source, this Project Sakura Q GSI is actually ported from ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 ROM.

To get to know what bugs I usually found on GSI I used on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone, check it on: Common GSI Bugs on ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android Phone.

Unlike most of ROM project that is based on AOSP, Project Sakura made a choice to built the ROM project around LineageOS instead.

But unlike LineageOS that is only ships minimal features of customizations, Project Sakura Q instead extended it to become full featured ROM like CrDroid or Bliss.

And what’s awesome of this Project Sakura Android Q GSI built is, it has working FM radio on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone (I was using the ARM64AB). Maybe it is because the GSI is ported from ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 ROM which perhaps shares some similarity in hardware or software.

Bugs I found on this Project Sakura Android GSI on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2

I was installed the ARM64AB of this Sakura Project GSI on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone and found some bugs:

  • Dead flashlight
  • Dead camera

However the above bugs seems more like to my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 vendor bugs as I also experienced it when using another GSI with the Android 10 vendor of the phone.

Additional patches for this ArrowOS Android Q Generic System Image (GSI)

When I try to boot the first time of this ArrowOS Android Q Generic System Image (GSI) on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone (I was installed ARM64A), it is stuck and reboot itself back to fastboot. But by flashing the SELinux Fix Q GSI A patch can solve it, you can download it below:

Just like I said earlier, ArrowOS focus is to give users the original AOSP experience with selected essentials extra features only. With only minimal features to be maintained means more stability and developers can focus more to the performance tuning instead.

Even on the older version which is ArrowOS Pie GSI, it is one of a few GSI that I found Miracast are working on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone.

Because the system is not bloated with unnecesarry features, the ArrowOS Q is one of GSI we would like to consider if we have a low end Android device, just like my ASUS Zenfone Live L2.

Samsung Sans Mod 1000 Fonts (Flipfont) APK Download

Samsung Sans Mod 1000 Fonts (Flipfont) APK Download

Nerdizen.xyz — Samsung Sans might be the exclusive font default to Samsung devices, but not this one because this Samsung Sans flipfont has been modded to include ± 1000 fonts in a single APK!

Usually on a Flipfont app / APK, it only include one to five fonts. But unlike other, this Samsung Sans Flipfont I’m going to share is the modded one where by installing it, we can add more than 1000 fonts at once from the single APK.

As a foreword, I want to say that this Samsung Sans mod 1000 fonts Flipfont APK is not mine, but I found someone posted it on XDA Forum long-long ago maybe more than 7 years ago. I remember that was when I still using my Android 4.4 Kitkat Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ phone.

Samsung Sans Flipfont mod 1000 fonts banner

What I want to say is because it was long ago, I have lost the link to the original thread and author who was first posted this Samsung Sans mod 1000 fonts Flipfont APK on the XDA Forum (sorry and huge thanks to you whoever made this awesome Samsung Sans Flipfont mod).

So, if you know the link to the original thread that was first posted about this Samsung Sans mod 1000 fonts Flipfont APK on the XDA Forum, you can comment below and I will add the link on this post.

Steps how to apply the Samsung Sans Flipfont Mod APK

Note: This Samsung Sans Flipfont Mod apk could not be installed over if we already have Samsung Sans Flipfont installed on your device (Probably the original Samsung Sans Flipfont) because it will have signature conflict. The problem is if the original Samsung Sans was preinstalled on our Android device which means it is a system app, so we need root: to remove/uninstall the original Samsung Sans Flipfont first, OR we can force install (update) this Samsungs Sans Flipfont Mod by disabling signature verification.

Steps:

  1. Install the Samsung Sans Mod 1000 fonts flipfont APK just like normally installing an app to our Android device.
  2. Open the font setting on our Android device. The Flipfont or change font setting usually located under “Settings” → “Display”.
  3. Because the Samsung Sans mod has 1000 fonts included, it might take few seconds before it completely loaded.
  4. After the fonts are completely loaded and all showed up, just choose the font we want to use as the display font of our Android device. Done!
Font list preview video on the Samsung Sans Mod 1000 fonts

Getting the “ttf” from the Samsung Sans mod 1000 fonts Flipfont Mod APK

For advanced users, example our Android device do not have the Flipfont feature and we want only to get the font “ttf” file for whatever the reason it is, we can also explore and extract the Samsung Sans mod Fliptont APK.

For example we can apply the packed font ttf(s) using font changer app (usually need root access) to change the display font of our Android device or maybe used it for something else.

A little bit About Flipfont on Android

So What is Flipfont? Well as much as I know, Flipfont is a feature on an Android device where we can change our Android device’s font on the fly easily from the system Settings menu.

Usually Flipfont or the change font menu can be found under “Settings” -→ “Display”.

The advantage of Flipfont is it is kind like extendable, where we can install additional fonts just like installing (or uninstall) an Android app.

However, not all Android ROMs has Flipfont built in. As far as I know, Flipfont can only be found on stock Android ROMs built from the device manufacturer like:

  • Samsung Touchwiz. My old Samsung Galaxy V SM-G313HZ has Flipfont feature built in on the stock ROM that is Android 4.4 Kitkat.
  • ASUS ZenUI. Flipfont is included on the Android 8.0 Oreo stock ROM of my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone.

The above ROMs is also the two where I was installed & tested the Samsung Sans mod 1000 fonts Flipfont and found it works nicely.

So far I have not found any Android custom ROM I have installed that has Flipfont feature included.

Dual Booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 20.x on Toshiba Dynabook R734/K

Dual Booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 20.x on Toshiba Dynabook R734/K

Nerdizen.xyz — Dual booting is a process to make our computer / laptop to be able to boot into two different Operating Systems (OS). And my first experience of dual booting a computer / laptop is when I dual booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 20.3 on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K.

I want to try Linux based OS on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K but want still keeping my Windows OS installation intact in case I want to use the Windows 10 back. And that’s where dual booting are the lifesaver.

Actually there are plenty of Linux based OS out there called distros (similar to Android’s custom ROM, maybe) and from many articles, Linux Mint always comes on the list as one of popular Linux distro (I also kind of like the desktop and User Interface), and that’s why I choosed Linux Mint for my very first Linux computing experience.

Default dekstop appearance of Linux Mint 20.3 on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K

After so many years using Windows (8.1 and 10), I begin to start interested on Linux based OS upon reading articles on internet about how lighweight and efficient Linux based OS are in term of performance and resources usage, and about Linux are Open Source which means it is comes from community, by community, and for community.

But the main reason I started using Linux based OS is because I am interested in programming (mostly coding). Again from the articles I read on the internet, using Linux based OS is a no brainer for people who are mostly using the computer working with programming because everything tends to be more stable thanks to the Linux being Open Sourced.

Steps dual booting Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.x on Toshiba Dynabook R734/K

  1. Prepare the Linux Mint 20.x installation media. Here, I am using Rufus program to make the Linux Mint installation media into my USB drive.
Rufus configurations Linux Mint 20.3 ISO for my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K
  2. Boot our Toshiba Dynabook R734/K into BIOS mode: Restart the laptop, then when the LEDs are turned on, press repeatedly the F12 key until it entered the BIOS / ‘Boot Menu’.
  3. Now we are entering the Boot Menu. If you have not plugged in the installation media yet, now is the time.
  4. If on the “Boot Menu” we can see the installation media listed (in my case it is “USB Memory)”, then we can just choose it to straightly boot our Toshiba Dynabook R734/K to start the Linux Mint 20.x installation media, otherwise proceed to step 5.
Boot menu BIOS on Toshiba Dynabook R734/K
  5. [Optional] Make the installation media to be the first boot priority. On the main “Boot Menu”, choose “Enter Setup” → “Advanced”, scroll down and find “Change Boot Order”. Next, make the Linux Mint installation media into the top of the list, in my case it is the “USB Memory” (use the touch pad to reach the “Move Up” / “Move Down” buttons). Next, choose “OK” → “Exit” → “Exit Saving Changes”.
Set installation media boot priority on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K
  6. Now we are on the Linux Mint 20.x installation boot menu, choose “Integrity check” to boot the Linux Mint 20.x live OS on our Toshiba Dynabook R734/K while checking whether our Linux Mint 20.x installation media has everything working fine or not.
Installation media Boot Menu of Linux Mint 20.3 on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K
  7. Yay! We are now on the desktop of Linux Mint 20.x live OS (pretty neat User Interface for me). Double click the “Install Linux Mint” icon to begin the installation process. Follow first installation configurations like choosing languages, keyboard, etc. NOTE: It’s recommended to run the installation offline (without connecting to Wi-Fi) to avoid unexpected issues.
  8. Then on the “Installation type”, choose “Install Linux Mint alongside Windows 10”. Next, adjust how much space we want to give for our Linux Mint 20.x OS installation on our Toshiba Dynabook R734/K by shifting the block edges between Windows 10 and Linux Mint. After done, choose “Install Now”.
Set disk sizes for Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.3
  9. Next, configure our profile settings like location (time), computer name, password, etc.
Profile setting wizard on Linux Mint 20.3
  10. Done! Restart our Toshiba Dynabook R734/K when prompted. Now everytime we powered on our laptop, we can choose to boot between Windows 10 or Linux Mint 20.x.
Selet OS to boot on GRUB menu every we boot computer

This tutorial may also be the same whether we are using another Windows version like Windows 7, 8.1 etc. with another Ubuntu-based Linux distro.

Linux Mint 20.x quick review on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K laptop

The Linux Mint 20.3 is running smoothly, flawlessly, on my old Toshiba Dynabook R734/K which is released around 2015 that has Intel i3-4000M processor with 4 GB RAM.

I am still learning and makes coding mostly as hobby, so most of the times I switched to the Linux Mint to use it for that purpose either for blogging.

Compared to Windows 10, I can feel significant differences when multitasking where programs I used such as Visual Studio, Android Studio, Eclipse, etc. are run snappier on the Linux Mint 20.3.

Plus, I really loved the clean User Interface of Linux Mint 20.3 has. And customizations is just crazy, Windows 10 which is a paid OS are very lame compared to the free OS Linux Mint 20.3.

Surprisingly after some times using Linux Mint 20.x on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K laptop, for me it can also almost completely replace the Windows OS on daily jobs like typing word document, multimedia like watching movies, and even playing games (I mostly use emulators to play older console titles like PS2, Nintendo, Sega, etc.).

Heck I can even played Windows games on Linux Mint 20.3 on my Toshiba Dynabook R734/K laptop using a program called WINE. You can check the video of some Windows games gameplay I played on Linux Mint 20.3 on my laptop using WINE at Youtube below:

Until this post first published, this Havoc-OS Q is my daily driver I used on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone. I love this ROM for it’s performance thanks because it built as vanilla.

On previous post I have shared about the Evolution X Q custom ROM for ASUS Zenfone Live L2, and compared to this Havoc-OS I can say that both ROMs shares similar features except the GAPPS presented in Evolution X.

In fact, I would preferred the Evolution X Q rather than Havoc-OS if it did not have stock GAPPS included. Because of the stock GAPPS, the Evolution X is just too unresponsive, more battery hunger, and more storage space used (personal opinions).

Just like I said, this Havoc-OS Q has been my daily driver on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone for maybe ± 3 months now. It’s pretty stable , even FM radio and Miracast are working.

But, to increase the performance especially when multitasking when using this Havoc-OS Q ROM, I suggest you to enable zram. You can read it here: How to Enable zram on Android.

Bugs on the Havoc-OS Q ROM on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone

However, I noticed a few bugs when I used this Havoc-OS Q ROM on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone, and it is :

  • Dark video on stock camera app when using front camera. Solution: Install another camera app like HedgeCam, Open Camera, etc.
  • SIM card setting of call preference always revert back to SIM 1 after a reboot.

Evolution X Q Custom ROM - ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Download + Review

Nerdizen.xyz — After Nusantara Project R custom ROM I have shared before, now here it is another custom ROM for ASUS Zenfone Live L2 that is even better (or not, personal opinion) and that is Evolution X Android Q custom ROM.

Just like the previous Nusantara Project custom ROM for ASUS Zenfone Live L2 I have shared, this Evolution X Android 10 custom ROM is also a real custom in term it is not a GSI based ROM.

My personal point of view, I prefer this Evolution X Q ROM over the previous Nusantara R Project custom ROM because it has less bugs compared to it and more features works like FM radio and Miracast when I used it on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone.

Evolution X is an AOSP based custom ROM project that has idea to bring every Android users a chance to feel the Pixel experience along with tons of customizations.

Just like I said earlier, this Evolution X custom ROM is better in my opinion than the previous Nusantara Project custom ROM because when I used it on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone, it has less bugs and… FM radio and Miracast working! Finally!!!

The downside hovewer when I used this Evolution X custom ROM on my ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone is because the ROM is packed with Google Apps (GAPPS) included and it is no less than stock GAPPS if I recall it correctly, yep, this ROM is like a bit heavier and slower.

To increase the system performance when using this Evolution X custom ROM on your ASUS Zenfone Live L2 Android phone, you may want to consider:

  • Enable ZRAM (use app method, I can’t make build.prop method to work).
  • Disable unused system apps (yeah, I am looking at you Google Apps…).
